Islamophobia in France: 2022 presidential elections and the criminalization of Muslim civil society

In this panel discussion, Bridge Senior Research Fellow Mobashra Tazamal speaks with Rim-Sarah Alouane (French legal scholar), Marwan Muhammad (French-Egyptian author and statistician), and Dr. Alain Gabon (Associate Professor of French Studies) on Islamophobia in France and its impact on French Muslim civil society. The talk focused on the upcoming French presidential elections and how many of the candidates have employed Islamophobia in their political campaigns. The panelists talked about the criminalization of French Muslim civil society under President Emmanuel Macron, how the concept of laïcité has changed over time, and how France’s right-ward shift is impacting Europe and the world.
