Train station experiment reveals one way to counteract bias against Muslims | Recommended Read

An experiment conducted in German train stations involving paper cups and escaping oranges has found that people are less likely to help a woman if she appears to be Muslim — but they’re more likely to help that same woman if she somehow proves that she shares their social values. The findings, described in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveal that discrimination is a somewhat fluid phenomenon that can be mitigated — within certain limits. read the complete article

More US voters see white nationalism as a threat: poll

Forty-seven percent of voters said they perceive white nationalism as a threat, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday and taken in the days after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, last weekend. It’s a 10-point increase from March, when 37 percent of voters said white nationalism was a threat in poll that followed the New Zealand mosque shootings. read the complete article

Anti-Muslim Graffiti Painted on Halal Butcher Shop After Cow Slaughter Controversy

A halal butcher shop in Bloomfield that was at the center of the controversial public slaughter of a cow was targeted by vandals who sprayed an anti-Muslim message on the side of the building. Police said Wednesday that they were dispatched to 52 Granby St. to take a complaint of vandalism. Boris Johnson would be barred from joining the police because of his remarks describing black people as “piccaninnies” and comparing Muslim women to “letterboxes”, the UK’s most senior counterterror officer has said. Air Canada blasted for allegedly asking girl, 12, to remove hijab before boarding

On Aug. 1, Fatima Abdelrahman was flying from San Francisco International Airport to Toronto for a squash competition, Canadian news site Narcity reports. It was Abderlrahman’s first time flying alone without family. After having her passport checked and passing through airport security, an unnamed Air Canada employee reportedly pulled the girl aside and insisted that she remove her headscarf, the preteen told City News. read the complete article
