Today in Islamophobia: In Germany, riot police have clashed with opponents of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party on the streets of Erfurt, meanwhile in Australia, Islamophobia Register Australia Executive Director Aishah Ali told NewsWire that the organization had “hundreds of high-risk cases stuck in a backlog” because it simply did not have enough resources to manage them, and in the United States, GOP gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. John James suggested that Muslims in Dearborn who participated in a religious gathering were “extremists” and vowed to target a prominent American Muslim civil rights organization if elected. Our recommended read of the day is by William Ton for The Canberra Times on how the assault of a Muslim man outside of his mosque in Melbourne triggered a flood of anti-Muslim social media comments and hate speech in what analysts are flagging as a highly problematic trend of rising online hate speech in the country. 'Are you Muslim?': attack points to rising hate | Recommended Read

When confronting footage of a father-of-three being assaulted outside a mosque was shared on social media, it sparked a flood of comments. But rather than well wishes or expressions of concern, the dumbfounded man was hit with a barrage of anti-Muslim abuse, including questions as to why the offenders "didn't kill him". "When I see those comments, that's very dangerous, that's something unbelievable," the man, who has asked not to be identified because of safety concerns, told AAP. "I don't want to accept it." The 43-year-old had finished prayers and was driving through the carpark outside his local Hampton Park mosque, in Melbourne's southeast, to pick up his children on June 24 when two men violently ambushed him. "Are you Muslim? Are you Muslim?" the father said one of the men asked. CCTV captured the three talking before one man suddenly threw a hook punch at his head. The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils said the incident represented a broader escalation of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric. "It begins with words, with suspicion, with politicians and commentators casting Muslims as a threat," president Rateb Jneid said. He said that language filters into everyday lives, shaping attitudes and emboldening people. read the complete article

Islamophobia Register Australia calls for targeted funding amid spike in anti-Muslim hate

Australia’s only national service dedicated to tracking anti-Muslim hatred has been pushed to its brink amid an untenable spike in Islamophobia and a lack of sustainable funding. Islamophobia Register Australia Executive Director Aishah Ali told NewsWire the organisation had “hundreds of high-risk cases stuck in a backlog” because it simply did not have enough resources to manage the workload any faster. To fund its victim advocacy work over the last 12 months, the organisation has relied on rollover funding from a commonwealth social cohesion grant provided in 2024-25 in response to a spike in Islamophobia after October 7, 2023. The remainder of these funds has now dried up as of June 30 this year. “These are cases of children being physically accosted, visibly Muslim women being attacked, these are serious and violent assaults, many of which are traumatic, high-risk cases but we just can’t get through it all ourselves, as hard as we try,” Ms Ali said. read the complete article

United States

How Hollywood teaches the world to fear Muslims

Since its foundation, Hollywood has taught audiences around the world to fear Muslims, misrepresenting millions of believers through orientalist stereotypes. Even if representation has improved in recent years, a study found that only 1 percent of characters in TV series are Muslim, and many are still portrayed through racist tropes. Experts told TRT World that the situation has worsened in recent months as production companies scale back diversity initiatives. read the complete article

James responds to Islamophobia accusation, vowing to target Muslim org

As he campaigns to lead a state home to a large Muslim population, GOP gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. John James suggested in a recent interview that Muslims in Dearborn who participated in a religious gathering were extremists, and amid backlash, vowed to target a prominent American Muslim civil rights organization. In a Monday, June 29, interview on the conservative news channel Newsmax, anchor Rob Finnerty asks James about the Ashura procession in Dearborn the previous day, in which Shia Muslims came together to mark the death of a religious leader in a 7th century battle. Presented with footage from the event during the interview under the caption "RADICAL ISLAMIC TAKEOVER OF AMERICA CONTINUES," James said, "I didn't go and fight extremists to have them on our doorstep here. Under no circumstances will we be a home in Michigan for extremism." The Shelby Township Republican, who often highlights his background as a combat veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War, faces accusations from local political and Muslim leaders that his comments traffic in Islamophobia. read the complete article

Trump is a danger to US democracy. But the resistance is working

This is hardly the first challenge to US democracy. The early nation had no rights for Black people and no vote for women. It survived Jim Crow, the McCarthy era, and the “war on terror”. Yet there is no denying the seriousness of the threat posed by Trump. He is trying to implement the classic autocrat’s playbook by chipping away at the restraints on executive authority. He has made dangerous inroads, but in most cases, the opposition has been significant. A struggle is under way, and the prospects for his success are dimming. We must reaffirm its core values. There is a battle taking place that must be joined. It is a moment to affirm that America is founded on ideals, not xenophobia; that it celebrates the rule of law, not lawlessness; that it represents a national community, not divisiveness and hatred; and that it treats all people as individuals worthy of respect rather than as tools for the aggrandizement of a would-be king. read the complete article

Germany

German riot police clash with protesters hoping to block far-right AfD conference

Riot police have clashed with opponents of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party on the streets of Erfurt in Germany, where thousands met to block roads and prevent AfD delegates from attending the party’s biennial national conference to elect its leadership. Police reported 20,000 protesters were demonstrating in the eastern city, where Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla are expected to be re-elected as the party’s co-leaders in the run-up to crucial regional elections in which AfD could win power at state-level for the first time. AfD’s decision to hold its conference on the centennial of a Nazi party conference in nearby Weimar, where Adolf Hitler unveiled the Hitler Youth movement and introduced the Hitler salute, has caused outrage in Germany. Historians and politicians say the timing of the conference is a deliberate provocation, which AfD has denied, describing its critics as “clearly only interested in the compulsive weaponisation of history”. Opponents of AfD accuse the party of promoting racist and anti-Muslim policies, and are angered by AfD politicians downplaying Nazi crimes. read the complete article
