Statement: Yom Kippur shooting in Halle, Germany

Published on 10 Oct 2019

Our hearts break with the community of the Halle, Germany where a gunman attempted an attack on a synagogue on this holy day of Yom Kippur.  We grieve with the families and friends of the victims and the intended victims. Those of us who try to bring public awareness to the dangers of Islamophobia are acutely aware that it is part of a broader agenda that weaponizes the fears and hatreds of diverse communities worldwide.  Hatred of Jews — like hatred of Muslims – represents no ideals, no core religious values. Both reflect the reality that people can be driven to commit atrocities in a climate that valorizes hatred and violence. We pledge to continue working with Jews, Muslims, Christians and people of all religions or none to counter hatred and protect the most vulnerable among us.
