Activists Petition Gates Foundation Not To Honor India’s Prime Minister
Activists delivered a petition with more than 100,000 signatures to the Gates Foundation’s Seattle headquarters on Monday asking the high-profile organization not to give an award to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event next week. The petition from Justice for All says the award, which the foundation is giving to Modi for a sanitation initiative in India, “could not have come at a more awkward time.” It points to recent events in Kashmir, where Modi’s Hindu nationalist-led government stripped its part of the Muslim-majority state of its autonomy last month and then arrested thousands of people and cut communications in a widespread crackdown. read the complete article

Myanmar’s envoy to the top U.N. human rights body says his country rejects any move to bring the issue of alleged rights violations against ethnic Rohingya Muslims to an international legal forum. Myanmar has rejected most of the accusations and dismissed a report last September by a U.N-appointed panel which said military officers carried out the campaign against the Rohingya with “genocidal intent” and should stand trial. “The threat of genocide is continuing for the remaining Rohingya,” Australian human rights lawyer and panel member Christopher Sidoti said in a statement accompanying a new report issued in Geneva, adding that Myanmar was failing to prevent and punish genocide. read the complete article
