Quebec’s ban on religious symbols will only embolden the far right | Recommended Read

For 30 years, France’s secularism debate has led successive governments to place increasingly stringent limits on the right to wear religious (mainly Muslim) symbols. The gradual escalation of that debate ultimately led a centre-right government to adopt a law in 2004, which prohibited religious symbols among students attending public elementary and secondary schools. read the complete article

In a protest inspired by US civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks, they bathed in suits covering their entire bodies - apart from the face, hands and feet - in the city of Grenoble on Sunday. They created anti-Muslims mindset: Owaisi blames BJP, RSS over lynchings

A day after a man was allegedly lynched in Jharkhand, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said such incidents are not going to stop as the BJP and RSS have increased hate against Muslims in the society. Indian police have arrested five people after a Muslim man was beaten to death by a mob. Tabrez Ansari, 24, died days after being attacked by people who accused him of stealing a motorcycle in the eastern state of Jharkhand. read the complete article

Living in Calgary, Babur Ilchi and his family didn’t know for two weeks that his maternal grandfather had died in their country of origin. In fact, they didn’t even know that the grandfather, Nurmuhemmet Tohti, had been detained during the winter. Absurdity and cruelty come together in one new Quebec law

As of last Sunday, in a bid to ensure Quebec vaunted secularity, the government has banned the wearing of religious symbols by certain government workers. Today in Islamophobia: In the United Kingdom, City Councillors in Peterborough have agreed that Islamophobia has no place in the municipality by adopting a special statement on the issue which will now be promoted across the city, elsewhere in the country, British anti-Islam activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, a.k.a Tommy Robinson, won a bid to trim his 18-month sentence for contempt of court yesterday, meaning he will be released from jail within a week, and lastly in United States, Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy is calling anti-Muslim graffiti found at two separate locations “unacceptable” noting that police-reported hate crimes rose by 32% in the province in 2023 alone. Today in Islamophobia: In India, a professor from an elite, private liberal-arts university has been arrested for a social media post about news briefings on the military operation against Pakistan, meanwhile in the United States, according to reporting by The Guardian, the Trump Administration has officially closed its Office of Palestinian Affairs in Jerusalem, with many foreign policy experts and activists calling the move a “systemic downgrade of US-Palestinian relations”, and lastly in United Kingdom, the newly elected Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Safiya Saeed, has made history as the first black woman who wears a hijab to be appointed to the role. Today in Islamophobia: In Denmark, two men have been fined 10,000 kroner ($1,500) each after a court found them guilty of desecrating a copy of the Quran, one of these men being Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the anti-Islamic Stram Kurs party, meanwhile in India, outrage has erupted after a Muslim professor was arrested over a social media post which praised India’s military operations against Pakistan while criticizing attacks on Indian Muslims, and lastly, the United Nations has called for an investigation into “credible reports” that Indian authorities rounded up Rohingya refugees and expelled them, in some cases by putting them into the Andaman Sea off the shore of the same country they had escaped from.
