Published on 20 Oct 2016

The Bridge Initiative is committed to conveying information and research about Islamophobia to individuals at key institutions in the worlds of policy and news media.

On Tuesday, October 18th, Georgetown’s Bridge Initiative faculty member, Engy Abdelkader, participated in a roundtable discussion, “Amplifying Muslim American Narratives”, at The White House together with several dozen Muslim American advocates, scholars, leaders, and activists. engy_2016_cropped_for_web

The session connected members from the tech industry and government agencies to the Muslim community to explore ways to promote narratives “” such as showcasing the community’s diversity, successful women, and those in service “” to counter rising Islamophobia in the US today. During the session, a number of participants shared insightful observations.

Abdelkader stressed the importance of also connecting to potential partners in broadcast media and mainstreaming Muslim American voices to counteract and combat anti-Muslim bigotry and discrimination.

Abdelkader previously participated in a White House roundtable discussion on bullying and was invited to its annual Eid celebration earlier this year.
